Part I,
Part II Natalie was sleeping, but Brian couldn’t.
He’d always hoped that she would come to him, but a part of him had accepted that it would never happen. The part of him that refused to give up hope, though, had never expected it to be like this.
Making love to her had been so much more than he’d ever expected, but he couldn’t shake off the guilt. Yes, he’d been drinking a bit before she’d come over, but he hadn’t had enough to use it as an excuse for what he’d done.
It was obvious that she’d had more than one too many, and if she’d been sober, she never would have come on to him like that.
He sat in a chair facing the bed, watching her sleep as he sipped at the rum she’d brought with her. The more he drank, the guiltier he felt. He wanted nothing more than to climb back into his bed and hold and cherish her, but he didn’t deserve that, didn’t deserve her.
It was only a matter of time before she woke up, hung over, and realized what he did. She would hate him, and he wouldn’t fault her for it.
So he sat and drank and watched. Sometime after dawn, he finally dozed off. He woke when he heard her surprised exclamation. He rubbed his eyes and tried to focus on her. She was sitting up, holding the sheet above her breasts and looking at him in shock.
“What happened last night?” she whispered. “I don’t remember coming here.”
The guilt twisted sickeningly in his gut. She must have been more drunk than he’d thought. It made him feel even worse.
“I’m so sorry, Natalie. You came to me, tempted me, and I was too weak to resist.” he admitted, anguished.
