Overcast, windy and wet -- that describes my entire winter break. Of course, that's normal weather here. Sorry to hear you've had to experience it. And, uh, what's sputum?
ps - I've never called you "Del" before, but I will now. Nonetheless I feel I must inform you that it makes me think of Sandman, vector calculus and you all at the same time.

I was going to use the word "loogie" but couldn't really think of the appropriate spelling.
In a less lazy mood today, I had to Google it and found this site:
http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=19980113
which defines it 'an expectorated bit of phlegm'
My Stedman's medical dictionary defines it as:
"expectorated matter, especially mucus or mucopurulent matter expectorated in diseases of the air passages."
There are ciliated cells in our trachea that are constantly pushing this stuff up and your two options for it, it either comes out as sputum...or you SWALLOW IT (which is how many a parasite can have a circuit from the lungs into the GI tract).
Fun, fun stuff.
