I heard something last night too.

It wasn't screaming though, but prehaps I was too far off to hear it. It was fainter, like someone humming. There were noises outside the door. ...Perhaps I should have been more frightened than I was?

You think so? You're rather new to all of this, so I'm not sure I can really take your word for it.

I've been in other institutions. It's not quite as common as you would assume it to be.

You shouldn't have to become accustomed to any of this "shit", as you put it. It's not usually quite this bad in these places, not in this day and age.

Though I suppose it doesn't matter. We'll both become accustomed to it sooner or later.
