Got a beer brewing kit from my dad. It's going well. Should be bottling on Saturday, got 23 one litre bottles from a brew store today. I checked the specific gravity of the beer today to see if it would be ready, and it smelled really alcoholic. I'm sure some of that was CO2, not alcohol. According to the chart I've got, it's sitting at 4.5% ABV, ( Read more... )

Racism still exists and still creates barriers for many people. Economic discrimination exists today, it is not a thing of the past.

Being aware of your race doesn't make you hypersensitive, and newsflash people are different. There are many various ways we can (and do) describe differences between people and race and culture are two of them. There is nothing wrong with recognizing that we are all different (within specific cultures and races - there are different individuals) but that we all have the right to the same opportunities and freedoms.

This groups philosophy seems to ignore that we are not all on an even playing field when it comes to our social-economic situation.

And I personally think that their suggestion of racial preference is ridiculous.

First, I said hyperaware, not hypersensitive. Is the best way to solve racism creating new walls and divisions by deliberately dividing people by their race? That sounds an awful lot like racism to me, just of a different breed.

It's still racism, it's still treating these people like they're children who can't manage their own affairs. How will that help them? Bursaries, scholarships, etc... are all great things to help the underprivileged improve their lot, but why not give those out based on merit, rather then race?

And I don't see how free money relates to "the right to the same opportunities and freedoms", especially when the money doesn't relate to a lack of opportunity, but the colour of your skin.

Racism will always exist as long as their is economic disparity between races (much as the decline in sexism can be linked to a rise in female income). Communal integration between races is only possible when economic circumstances lead to equitable lifestyles ( ... )

"I personally would love to see racial scholarships moved into colour-blind economic disadvantage bursaries."

That's basically what I'm saying. If there's a disparity, and someone who should go to school can't, by all means lets find some ways to help them. Why do they need to be race specific? What is it about a persons race that makes them different from someone else who needs help?

"I should note that I think the idea of a caucasian scholarship is assinine and those offering it are dicks."

I think they're mostly just doing it to illustrate the point I've been making. It isn't worth very much money ($250, if I remember right), it's one of those 'raising awareness' sort of things; if it's wrong to have a white scholarship, why isn't it wrong to have a black scholarship? The fact I've had two people comment shows that it is at least getting people thinking about it.
