Polar Bears

 Sparked by this ( m-tothe-at.livejournal.com/177482.html)post on Polar Bears and endangered species, I started to comment and it got too long.

Polar bears are a really touchy subject up here. They tried to limit the quota for polar bears in the Baffin Region, but due to time constraints,(ie: by the time they got to it, the 100 and some bears ( Read more... )

It's interesting to hear your perspective on it since you're living up there.

I suppose my take on it is that climate change is affecting polar bears, but perhaps not in their numbers quite yet. Does that make sense? Like, it's affecting their hunting patterns, their territory, probably what they're eating, but not yet affecting them enough to severly diminish their numbers?

It would be very scary to have any of them in town with you, let alone 4 or 5! I still don't want their population to drop, but it's a shame that they are intruding on human territory since that can only mean bad things for both them and the people in town.

I agree with you on the hunting thing. It doesn't bother me (much) when people hunt for a real reason, such as food, clothing, etc. Especially since people who do this tend to use most if not all of the animal. I'm against commercial hunting, but not traditional hunting, especially when it's a part of a lifestyle like that, you know?

I just realized my perspective has really shifted. I used to be all "omg don't hunt seals!!!111one" and now I have seal skin mittens - nothing else keeps your hands warm here ( ... )
