Poor Alice and poor you. It all sounds very frightening but at least the x-ray makes her a step towards better and hey, the only grown ups at this kind of time are trained doctors.

It's very weird when your kid gets sick - it's not quite like being sick yourself, or quite like being around any other sick person. You identify with it as strongly as if you were the one who was sick, but layered with a sense of helplessness and a desperate desire to FIX IT NOW.

Yes, I felt like that when R had colic. I don't think I've ever felt so anxious for such an extended period of time.

And colic has the additional stressor of No Sleep For Anyone Ever, which really does make you go mad!

Have you called your dad for info/reassurace? He's kind of good at that childhood medicine thing.

Dad is definitely involved - he was actually taking care of her when the illness got serious, and there have been a lot of phone calls back and forth. Hooray, Doctor Pop!

FOLLOW UP -

Per the x-ray, it appears that Alice has both a viral infection AND the beginnings of pneumonia. And an ear infection.

The antibiotics and bronchodilators seem to already be having an effect - she was quite bouncy this morning, and her fever is gone. She's also getting her appetite back.

As the day wore on, though, she got very tired and cranky - I think she was feeling better and overextended herself, so now she's totally exhausted and realizes she's still sick. She's hysterically screaming at hubby right now because he's trying to put her to bed. Sigh.
