I am totally that guy...

As anyone who has dined with me in the past six months has noticed I've been eating a bit differently of late.

Essentially I'm high-protein, low-carb, low-fat, low-calorie though surprisingly not all that low-fun. It  does seem to to make dining with vegans a it of a trick if you like variety since the overlap is quite small: sauted veggies ( Read more... )

I'm trying to be this guy and failing repeatedly. What I really need is something to make this eating right thing completely brainless for me. In this instance I want to be told what to do, as far as meal plans and what to eat when go. I get frustrated by the amount of latitude in most of these diet plans, because the sheer overwhelming latitude of the grocery store in the first place is part of the problem.

Of course, the problem is that as soon as I'm told to eat something common that I just absolutely cannot stomach (eggs is a big one), I rebel and then the whole thing falls apart.

Nutrition is turning out to be remarkably tricky, psychologically.

I've spent a lot of time discussing this very problem with the folks at the weight management clinic I've been working with. Especially in the beginning it was very tricky. After a while it becomes a background process, but getting to that point can be frustrating.

Despite all the latitude, I have a set of staples that I tend to stick to rarely going outside of them unless there's an occasion.

I'm happy to share my plans w/ you if you're interested. It doesn't involve many eggs and might be adaptable for you quite easily, although your caloric requirements will likely be different than mine.

Quite interested. My unscientific RMR is about 1800, for comparison's sake, although you're likely much more active than I am. I only work out about an hour a day, and your exercise descriptions are pretty intense.

have you considered going to see a nutritionist? not sure how easy that would be to schedule what with the bs/ca in colorado thing, but it might be worth it to pay out of pocket to just get some face time with someone who knows about this stuff and ask of a very paired down meal plan. you can always add things very easily as you go.

You can have my cottage cheese. That stuff is NASTY.

No tall cottage cheese is created equal. I remember when I was visiting Wisconsin this summer, the variety in the grocery near my aunt's place was particularly unpalatable. The Trader Joe's stuff is the good kind.
I totally get it though. I won't go anywhere near a brussel sprout even if there are sums of money involved. They taste like poison.

Brussels sprouts have a compound that only 1/4 of the population can taste. I've heard this compound tastes like ass. Lucky me, I am in the 3/4 that cannot taste it. Perhaps this also explains my love of cottage cheese, as I could live on cottage cheese and tortilla chips alone (and have) for weeks.

I can most definitely taste that compound. Apparently there's something similar that's a 1/1000 chance (per my jr high chemistry teacher) and I can taste them both. They're both awful and I'd probably starve if brussels sprouts were the only food on earth.

Cottage cheese is for the win though. Wish I could buy it by the bucket.

i've also recently -- by which i mean over the past 3 years -- gradually started eating healthier: gone are the frozen dinners, except as a one-off here and there, and i'll pick up a couple of apples or a box of pasta or steaks or whatever, in addition to my weekly yogurts, cheese, etc. but since i have to carry everything home, it's all in portions that will last a week, but not much more, so it's generally small amounts.

that being said, i mostly like how my grocery bill has gotten smaller through purchasing less pre-packaged food. and that makes me feel even awesomer!

This is how I've been shopping as of late, but since I'm in no means "fit" or "active" or "pleasant to look at", I suspect people look in my cart and think, "keep dreaming, chubs." :D

This is how I have eaten for a good part of my life and I'm still fat too. Whatever.
I totally judge other people based on their shopping carts because I am an asshole.

I enjoyed your post about BMI.
