A few of my friends have heard me struggling with trying to explain the religion I grew up in. I've used the term "cult" before, I've said "seventh day adventist offshoot". None of them really fit, but thanks to wikipedia I can say that this:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worldwide_Church_of_God Is how I was raised, and very strictly too I might ( Read more... )

I like how the metaphors for your time in the faith are "A War" and "A Shipwreck"

Damn. I knew about the group's existance, but never read anything about it front-to-back. The thing to remember is that all these fucked up things are what make us who we are. But you already knew that.

If you haven't already; read "survivor" by Chuck Palahunik (or however you spell it). I imagine you'd at least identify, if not enjoy it.

Oh man. My mother used to listen to the radio show. I never paid much attention, I just remember hearing 'The World Tomorrow with Garner Ted Armstrong,' and then this very dour-sounding man droning on, and leaving the room to watch TV or something. I'm kind of squicked out thinking she was listening to this dogma.

It's not quite as bad as it sounds, there actually was quite a bit of room for debate. It has a sort of intellectual rigor to it in the old days that I've not seen in other denominations. Granted, It's that very same rigor that I learned from the church that has made me an agnostic now.
