I continue to be ashamed of you, California.

Today, the California Supreme Court ruled again on whether or not to uphold the same-sex ban created by Prop 8.

SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) -- The California Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a ban on same-sex marriage that state voters passed in November, but it allowed about 18,000 marriages performed before the ban to remain valid. ( Read more... )

It's terrifying when the will of the majority can decide the rights of a minority group. Sigh. Here's hoping for 2010!

Right? I think that's one of the biggest tragedies here, though it's really the only way we can do the legal system, sadly.

I'm pumped for 2010.

When Courage Campaign's first video to Fidelity came out, I watched it on a loop. While I'm happy that the proposition will not be enacted retroactively and existing marriages will be upheld, it's a hollow victory at best. The legal argument to challenge the constitutionality of the proposition was a tenuous one, so I can't say I'm surprised by this ruling - just extremely disappointed.

ETA: I just setup a monthly contribution to Courage Campaign. Every little bit counts!

God, all their videos are powerful and make me cry like a baby. Their TV ad for Fidelity is no different. If I watched it again, I would be a mess.

It's true. The legal argument was sort of weak, so I can't really point fingers or say I'm surprised, but it's still sad, and also because of how the ruling could possibly be cited in future measures to ban same-sex marriage.

You're amazing, you know that? I wish I had a job so I could contribute, too. <3

Have I mentioned that I'm actually Coloradan, not Californian?

They voted Democratic in the last election...they'll probably approve gay marriage before that state which I do not represent.

I did not know this, actually! But I guess this still makes you Californian too, no?

As sad as I am about my state, I love seeing all these other states approve same-sex marriage. IOWA FTW!

I deny both my driver's license and my permanent mailing address!

Yes, Iowa definitely ROCKS! Who knew? Heh.

Hah! Well, I don't blame you! But seriously, I was like BZUH? when they announced that about Iowa. Dude, if this TINY MIDWESTERN STATE CAN DO IT, why can't we?!

I remember being so proud of California when they legalized same-sex marriage, and it's just a shame to have slid backwards. I AM happy they didn't invalidate all the marriages that have already happened, and I know the fight's not near over. I have hope!

God, me too. I even remember posting about it here, having been so proud to have been Californian. But now... I mean, it's true, I guess I'm overlooking the fact that it's great they didn't rule the measure to be retroactive, but it's still a huge defeat on the political front.

And yes, I have a lot of hope, even if I'm mourning today. 2010, baby!

It sucks, huh? I think we'll get it ... eventually. Not soon enough, though.
