As for the rest, I got announcements that the T was having a "power problem" and was diverting the Red Line to buses from Harvard to JFK and diverting the Orange Line to the Green Line from North Station to Copley/Back Bay.
At Quincy Center they were admitting that there was a fire, which many people remarked on as unusual. It was described as being at "Downtown Crossing and South Station", which sounds scarily extensive.
Apparently there were two fires - one at South Station and one at Chinatown - both of which effected Downtown Crossing. I'm unclear as to whether they actually *spread* to Downtown Crossing, but at the least the smoke build-up choked Downtown out of commission.
D and I were at Kendall when it happened, so it was not nearly as exciting for us. We got down to the platform, and the T worker was like, "station's closed," and we were like, "hrm, ok." And then we had beers. I'm glad you made it home safe!

Also, I like beer as a reaction to diverted service. :)
