Funny article, but it misses the paint of "patches". Chess has been "patched" a million times... in the past. Most games are designed by people with little to no concern for issues actually relating to theory, and thusly, many of them are not all that great when they first go into action. Basically, a patch or a rule-change is enacted after many iterations make a problem absolutely clear. It is very possible that the patch won't fix the problem, or will create new problems, but that is just more evidence of the sloppy approach people have to game design.
