Tonight (well technically at this point last night).. I had some interesting conversations with a friend and I am on the verge of saying "Screw the corporate world" and attempting to follow my bliss... but I am scared out of my living mind ( Read more... )

I say go for it! I have a five year plan to shift my day job to part time and have more time and energy to commit to making a living off of my art, and if I found myself without a day job I would start that day. Maybe continue looking for something part time/low responsibility so you have some money coming in as you get your fledgling endeavor off the ground. The great thing about photography is you can always do events and portraits (and pet portraits, my boss just paid a ton to get her dogs photographed) to fill your portfolio and your pockets while you get your other work out there. :)

I agree. Your pics are beautiful. But until they start bringing in the dough, you may need something part time or full time with enough extra time for picture taking. I also agree with Peregrine below, find a niche that you can fill. Set up a good business model. The new thing I would add is never stop learning how to take better pics. You can always grow and improve, and it will help you sell your art.

I know you are a great photographer.. Any way you could try and set up your business, but maybe find something part time just to pay the bills in the short term, but give you time for your art as well? I'd say go for it, but have a back up plan in mind, in case things don't work out as you want.

P.S. In the interests of full disclosure: yes, I'm currently reading "Dare to Prepare: How to Win Before you Begin" by Ronald M. Shapiro and Gregory Jordan. Their recommendations resonate a lot with what I do, and want to do more of. I think their recommendations would help you feel more prepared to grow Kiwi Artistries as a business, but that may just be my "current book" bias.

This is the perfect time to start looking more seriously at your Art as business, though don't stop looking for other work. You might want to consider doing some photography and setting up an online shop on Etsy. I don't think the outlay for that would be much. You could also set up a booth at a local craft fair.
