I've used regular scotch tape to mask off the nail to do a french tip, but now I usually just freehand them. Its easiest if you wipe most of the polish off the brush and just get a little bit of polish on it. Then I just sort of paint/dab it on the ends and try to make the line smooth. I've seen some people on youtube freehand by painting across the nail sideways, too, going from each side into the center. Plus, I think using a topcoat makes the line look a lot smoother than it probably really is.
