Final papers galore!

I just met with a beta reader writing associate to go over my final paper for Astronomy - a story about a relativistic Quidditch game in which Harry & co. are flying close to the speed of light - and she was so cute about it. She said she loves Harry Potter, and when she read the story she was impressed that this person really knew her stuff. Hee. ( Read more... )

An HP fanfic with relativistic complications? You must share this when it's done. :)

Good luck with the Semantics paper - I know the pain of having to write a paper where you don't even know what to write about.

determiners are a good bet especially because they work differently in Romance languages than in English, in English, you have the uniqueness assumption, which is weaker in Spanish IMHO.

Look at Gundel et al's. 1993 paper on the Givenness hierarchy, that should give you some ideas. I can also point you to my thesis, where I'm summarising much of the literature.

You know my RL name, so you should be able to get that off www dot myrealname dot net

Thank you! This is extremely intersting. I found your thesis and am trying to find a copy of the Givenness paper in our library, but if I don't find the original it's not a big deal since your summary looks great. I'm sorry to bother you at the last minute, but thanks so much for commenting! I know you're on limited online time so I really appreciate it.

I think this is going to work, especially if I look at "givenness" in Romance languages as well. Let's hope my knowledge of French and Spanish holds up! :)
