Next, you buy the stuff for a brooder (heat/utility lamp, feeder, waterer) and a sterilite tub. :) Then you gets your chicks. :)

Lemme know when you want to put your order in, we can split shipping or whatever. I'd recommend Ideal rather than McMurray - they're close. (If you want a really fun daytrip and have a weekday you can free up? We can even drive down there, which is a blast. :P)

I dunno what I'll do yet - it's tempting to buy pullets instead of chicks, both because I'm nervous of trying to care for fragile chicks and because I'll know what color they are. How delicate are the chicks, really?

They're really NOT that delicate.

The hard thing about pullets is you just don't know how tame they'll be. For suburban chickens? Tameness is essential- if you ever have an escape, you have GOT to have chickens that want to be caught. :P The other thing is that you're really at the mercy of the seller as far as honesty goes- it's not like dogs where guessing ages is pretty easy!

Oh, and as far as delicate goes? I've only ever lost 1-2 per batch. It sucks, but it's really NOT a bad rate.

CHICKENS? Yea! Our neighborhood doesn't allow chickens, so I must admit I have chicken envy. Baby chicks are so fun for kids-just remember this most important fact:
A chicken is just like a loaded gun
You ALWAYS point the barrel end away from you:)
