Here's where I obsess about chickens and list the breeds I'm interested in ... Alphabetized! Edited with Cait's suggestions.
Ameraucana (green/blue eggs, many color hens)
Rhode Island (brown eggs, red hens)
Sussex (light brown eggs, speckled hens)
Wyandotte (brown eggs, laced colors)

Strongly recommend starting out with just RIRs and either the Australorps (they're VERY large) or Wyandottes- the Plymoths that I've encountered rae crappy layers (barred rocks, which are basically commercially bred layers) are better- but the RIRs and Wyandottes are a LOT tamer.

The Australorps are BIG birds- Buff Orps are smaller and a bit easier to handle.
