So I gave in, and now a part of my soul can be found at www.myspace.com/rindarindarinda. Now that's it there tho, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it. I can't even work out how to change the background. Useless.

I haven't read a whole lot this year, but I thought I'd just go through the few things I have and comment on them, cos I've been ( Read more... )

That is so true about Chuck Palahniuk. I loved Fight Club and Lullaby, marginally enjoyed Choke and then when I read Survivor, I was just so so over it. I like how many authors interweave subtle social commentary into their books... but it shits me that Palahniuk hits you with it like a sledgehammer.

As for Banana Yoshimoto, she's pretty good but not as good as Murakami. Her writing seems a bit more primitive to me. Meanwhile, I found two books for sale at Borders today... I think I'll blog about it! :D

Btw, what did you think of Glamorama by Bret Easton Ellis?

I read Glamaorama too slowly, and by the time i got to the end i couldn't remember what happened at the beginning and didn't have a freaking clue how any of it was supposed to fit together. Maybe it doesn't make sense anyway.
I liked Glamorama a lot just for Bret Easton Ellis' writing style, but i found the violence really confronting. Even more so than American Psycho, I think, maybe because it's just so unexpected. I read Glamorama before American Psycho, which I had to read for Art/Pornography/Blashempy/Propaganda and I was considering not readign American Psycho because Glamorama disturbed me so much. Especially that bit with the RU487, it made me feel sick for hours and I had trouble sleeping that night. for real!

I read A Bride Stripped Bare. Not sure about not being able to put it down, but it was a good book all the same. The gang bang scene in the hotel where the girl is involved too was a bit 'ick' for me!

Also, that Motley Crue book....Amanda Keller was talking about it on Spicks and Specks the other night, saying it was a very interesting read. Not sure why I thought of this but she was also talking about Ozzie Osborne and apparently he used to snort ANTS for kicks! Weirdo!

ps. if you want a book with overt social commentary, try 'Seven Types of Ambiguity' by Elliot Perlman. It gets rather painful after a while, even though I agree with everything he argues about!

haha, yeah there were some bits in the book that were pretty ick, especially that hotel one. but i guess it made some kind of point at the time.

don't ants bite? were they live ants? that would hurt. maybe that's where the kick came from.

have you read the perks of being a wallflower (by stephen chbosky)? it's one of my favourites at the moment (maybe cos it was the first book i have read cover to cover at least a few chapters every day in ages!)

i haven't read it, but i respect your taste in books (because it seems to be almost identical to mine!) so maybe i will give it a go next, after i read another birthday book i received from tim called 'the history of love.' i've been assured it's not depressing. heh.
