You're thinking WAY too much about this!
But, in relation to the idea that by using lesser karat gold they wouldn't be showing off their wealth the same way is silly. It's actually a perfect idea. Who can tell, just by looking at it, that gold is of a lesser karat? Practically no one but professionals. It would be a perfect ruse. Hide the highly valuable stuff, build with the pretty crap. But of course this brings us to your whole base element of why show off what is so readily available. I'm just saying that your idea of karat choice for building is slightly flawed. ;)

Not necessarily, you'd have to weed out the other higher Karats, besides you'd know that it's not worth as much, and if you're showing off your wealth, then go all the way on it. Don't half ass it. Though I do like the idea of some kind of alloy treatment to make the metal stronger, problem is I'm unsure if they had the technology for it back then.
And yea I am thinking way to much about it, but that's what I do. Watching movies gives you a very limited intellectual life, so I have to invent it for myself. I'd rather think about silly things then nothing at all.
