The John and Dean's dynamics is truly gratifying, this once. John might not have been the 'father-of-the-century' nominee, and went about many a thing wrong with regard to his oldest kid, but this one hunting incident provides insight enough into how he was also the man willing to give up his life/soul for his son.
Dean's experience with being forced to witness the kids' demise, helpless, is heartbreaking. Apart from harming Sam, that is the one way to rip his heart right out and shred it to pieces.
And by the time of the brotherly hug I'm sure my eyes were all misty.
Thank you for the haunting, emotionally engaging read!

This is just remarkable! I love how you fleshed out the atmosphere of the city. It's so vivid and bleak. And the tweaks you made with the timeline, setting Dean's return much later, and then adding the scenes with Sam, were awesome--not only do we get some comfort from John, but from Sam too? I ain't gonna object to that!
Most interesting though, was how you turned the return to the house around, and instead of Dean being the one to initiate it, and John having to figure out why, it was inverted. That was a really nice surprise, and you really make it work, make me believe John would do this kind of thing, force Dean to deal with the trauma head-on. And what he says to Dean here was just so heartbreaking:
"If what happened last year hadn't broken your heart then you wouldn't be the kind of man I would want to know."You just nailed it ( ... )

But I did and I'm glad I did.
I really loved the shower scene. I'm not sure if I loved it so much because John was crying or if it is because of the tenderness shown that we don't often see in John. Or if it is the fact that Dean has his head laying on John shoulders and just allows himself to be taken care of. That whole section just speaks of pain and a love so strong that it takes my breath away.
I can't even write how that bit made me feel. *is frustrated with inability to write coherently*
In any case, thank you.

I was a little bit worried about writing the violent parts that i_speak_tongue hinted at so beautifully sparingly, but my remix wouldn't have made sense otherwise, and I tried to pull my punches without being dishonest to the experience. I think your reaction is kind of what I was going for: horrified, but able to keep going.
I'm so very glad that the shower scene worked for you. Writing this has made me like John a lot more than I ever have.
tl;dr Thank you!
