Running stuff here

Sep 28, 2016 14:00

I've missed LJ for a while now, and since people have started making noises on FB about it, I decided to dip back in.

I'll start with a bit of running notes. I have other stuff to share, but I'll wait a bit on that.

I've been training for my 3rd half marathon on October 9 in Newport. My goal is sub-2-hour. Here is part 1 of my journey.( Cut because running might bore you )

I like reading people's running stories--there's always something that's inspirational! I was *never* any sort of runner or even athlete as a kid/young adult, apart from riding a bike everywhere and occasional forays into weight machine circuits. So it's good for me to know that everybody hits the same issues I do.

Also you've never looked overweight to me. But I know none of us are remotely reasonable on these things internally.

Thank you, R. I wonder if it has to do with a difference between our generation and our mothers' regarding attitudes about athletic ability (inborn vs. developed). My mom definitely did not encourage me in sports or even dance. I badly wanted to go for gymnastics when I was in 2nd grade, but she told me I had the wrong body for it - not skinny/leggy enough. The irony is that contemporary female gymnasts are much more broad-shouldered and muscular, and short. Now I think we have broadened our definition of what constitutes athleticism. My friend Jen is technically obese, but she is also incredibly active - she hikes, kayaks, runs, and she also sings and dances. She really glows with health, and it strikes me every time I see her (more so now that she is pregnant with twins). But her mom (also obese, but not nearly as active) died from complications due to diabetes ( ... )
