I agree with you on everything. I have to skip over all the posts where people obsess over what's acceptable in a published book or not because I always want to write cranky comments like yours above in response. Especially in the YA category, when people keep asking if they can use swear words or write about sex, etc., in YA. I always want to ask those people just how many YAs they've read in the last couple of years. Because in my opinion, if you want to write the genre, you should read the genre so you know what you can or can't include.
It's funny, your mention of Georgia being 49th in the country in public education, because growing up in California, I always heard we were 49th, ahead of Mississippi. Now I wonder if this is one of those things were like half the states believe they have the 49th best public education in the country. They probably all think they're better than Mississippi, though.
The only rule, as set by me, is that you must use apostrophes correctly. We get a ton of press releases and similar things emailed to us every day at work. Many of them are from PR flacks, and while I generally ignore them, they're usually well-written. But there are also numerous emails sent out by local people trying to get coverage for an event, or trying to persuade us to tell their story. And there's a fair share of those that aren't even close to complying with the rules of apostrophe use. Or other rules of grammar and/or spelling, but that's another story...
Side note: I'm going to be in Atlanta over the weekend that surrounds Dec. 1st. I was hoping I could meet up with you and Adam at some point, other than randomly running into Adam while he's finishing a shift at work. Let me know...
