Food and nutrients

I found a tracker online through the USDA where you enter your daily intake of foods (they have everything in a database) and then it tells you how much of every nutrient you are getting. This is really great - I have seen these before for calorie tracker websites, but I'm not really interested in the calories so much as all the other stuff. ( Read more... )

Don't let people tell you that you need more protein; you need amino acids.

You can go to nutritiondata.com to see amino acid profiles.

Don't be consumed with what the USDA tells you that you need. They are in bed with the beef and dairy industry.

Yeah - it's definitely the amino acids that matter, but it's impossible to look at the nutritional info on a box of X and see what precisely is in it - so I've been using protein as a proxy indicator. But I never knew tools like this one existed - thank you so much for forwarding along the info!

And yeah, I feel like if the USDA had their way, we would all be eating milk, beef, and corn for every meal :-/

very sweet on the tracker! if you ever want an offline one, there's a free app called cronometer. (it also shows you your actual/recommended in visual percentage form, so you don't have to read numbers, you can just look for the low bars or percentages.) the online tracker looks much more comprehensive though.

i would say eat the amount of calories your body feels it needs. i'm "supposed to" get ~2600 per day, and i probably eat 1600-1700. and i can run around and work out 2 hours a day based on that. as long as you get the vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. calcium, iron, and vitamin E are def some of the hardest for me.

actually i lied. cronometer has many more food options (ex: kashi golean crunch, fortified vanilla soy milk, etc)
