Don't you just hate the strain on your wallet?

It sounds like such a nasty thing to say, but its not something directed at my fiance. Nope, I'm not angry with him at all. Things couldn't be better between us. The communication is better than it has ever been, we're communicating our problems across and solving them, and it feels great. Nope, its not the relationship I have the problem with ( Read more... )

OMG I AM SO WITH YOU!!!!

My flights from Hong Kong to Aus used to be about $4000-$7000 HKD (divide by 14 for pounds). Now, I am LUCKY if I get a flight for under $10K HKD. FUCK!

10 more months, is all I can say, for me. That is one major factor in me moving very very soon.

Primarily, it's high energy costs, specifically aviation fuel costs. It's not going to change soon either, because airlines sign contracts for fuel at a given price for many months at a time, and except for Southwest Air (I believe), they've tended to guess wrong.

Airlines also tend not to be profitable to run. There's an old joke in the industry that the best way to make a million $ in the airlines is to start with a billion $. It's funny, because it's true. And so, there's all these piddly bag charges and all the rest to help them keep afloat.

Still, this isn't much solace for you or the average person out there. It sucks. All one can do is hunt for deals and be flexible with travel dates and hope that one can get a ticket at a reasonably decent price.

Heh, if one needs additional incentive to make the leap to SD from LD, this could be it!

While I feel your pain, I also think that the blame lies firmly in our own laps. We're the ones, after all, choosing to have these long distance relationships!

*sigh of relief* Its kinda nice to speak to people with the same problem here. While I do think everyone is entitled to a holiday, I do sometimes selfishly think "my trip is more important" if someone complains about holiday prices. I'm just hoping Delta stay nice and stable *touchwood*- Zoom collapsed today ( ... )

I only know 3 major airlines making any decent profit right now. Emirates, Singapore and Lufthansa. The others are mostly just above clearing/breaking even, or in defecit. Most have planned for this, so aren't going broke just yet, but yeah. It's really tough for the industry right now.

Oh and sorry for yet ANOTHER comment, but also due to global warming people don't want to fly anymore! it's all about carbon credits etc etc etc so they are losing a lot of business..

While I agree that price hikes suck, you're lucky that your flights only(!) cost £600. I'm in Australia and my SO is in the US. It's about $2000.00 (£1100.00) round-trip for me or him to visit one another. I'd take UK-US distance over AUS-US distance any day. ;-)

Sorry, I didn't mean to cause offense, I just wanted to get my feelings out about this...it's still a lot of money. The numbers may sound like they're not a lot, but I think exchange rates and the like also play a role in it, so that may make it a bit confusing. But from what I know, its all jumped up in price the world over. And of course, Australia is further away than the UK <.< Sorry if I seemed tactless, that wasn't my intention!
