I think you'll find most of the beggars around Nottingham are just druggies, many not even homeless. I had a Liverpudlian girl, probably that same one, stop me after 11pm one evening when I was walking back past the Broadmarsh centre to Lenton from Sneinton, and she was crying a bit and saying she needed train money, and offered to sell me her phone if I could just give her the cash. So desperate for drugs she'd sell her phone? Or perhaps it was stolen? Who knows
( ... )
She seems to offer her phone every time, but who would take it? for a bit of small cash that your giving, allegedly a woman whos been stranded, with what feels like a genuine plea for help, it doesnt work morally to take it. Which makes it all the more irritating, as its what she is playing on. The fact that many people are genuinely quite caring.
They probably are. Its just that this one lady was particularly convincing, respectably dressed, and reasonably well turned out. Judgemental as i may be, when carrying mobile phone, handbag, wearing gold/fake earrings etc, you tend to take their word. She doesnt appear as a beggar/druggy/tramp, and thus you take her word for it. Or at least i did. Which is all the more irritating when you find out its a pile of bull shit.
I do believe that some people are on the street because of circumstances out of their control, but they get dragged so far down by all those who its self inflicted that they cant get any of the help they need.
With this revelation that she is a con, is there no temptation to call her bluff and take what she offers in return? *grins*
Yeah, there was a guy back in Bournemouth who walked round with a single big issue at the end of the day, collaring students with the line 'I know you won't want a big issue, but I need money for the shelter...' After the first couple of times you saw him, it dawned that he didn't have a big issue sellers badge, and the same rolled up magazine every time.
Well, she didnt have the gold ring with her last night, so maybe its already happened :P
I was concentrating more on not punching her than calling anyones bluff in a fashion any more subtle than 'ive given you money before goddamnit' followed by various curses. ..if it happens again, i shall most deffinitely have a more fitting response.
Next time I'm going to Notts, I'm gonna bring up with me a Yorkshire Terrier. If I bump into her, I'm gonna ask her to give it a blowjob forst if she's that desperate.
And if the Yorkie gets herpes, then it's a win/win situation.
