I only read the first step so far, but you can keep the aspect ratio if you hold down the shift key while dragging the edges in, when you scale it in transform-mode. just fyi :)
eta - cool, cool. so you just play with the crop then, there's nothing you look for especially? oh, and you didn't sharpen the image at all?

Like I said, I don't do close-ups like that a lot, because they always end up looking weird... like people have no eyes or super long foreheads or whatever. When I crop an image it just has to feel right, you know. My art teacher from school would kill me for saying this, but I don't really think that much about the cropping. It either looks right to me or not.
And thanks for reminding me, I actually did sharpen the image. I just wrote this from looking at the old psd and completely forgot that step. I'll add it... tomorrow, because I'm actually just headed for bed.

Ok, heh, well you just need to get a feel for it, then things just work.
