I would take out insurance, what if your car or your suitcase get nicked, or your card gets cloned? It's so cheap these days, I have annual worldwide insurance through Virgin and it cost £24!

John is adamant we get insurance as we are road tripping it (ie. he'll likely land me in hospital by racing through the Alp bends).

I'm looking and the cheapest I can find is circa £30 (and not worldwide). The small print on claims is crazy - for instance, on I don't remeber which company, the basic rate says that you only receive £5K, but that is only if one of us dies, on the premium you get £10K towards medical expenses without one of us coming back in a box, but obv its almost double (if not more) than the basic.

Oh yeah, the £24 is just for me, so for both of you is probably more. Might be worth getting your own separately though, as you travel to Poland etc quite a bit without him.

I don't actually need to get insurance for Poland - I have a separate health and life insurance scheme running there :) I think for this reason yearly insurance would be a bit wasted on me. Depends if I start venturing further into the world!

I will return to New York at some point :)

Hmmm, I always get insurance when I travel, just in case. You never know! I don't know what traveller's insurance rates are like where you live, though.

This sounds like an exciting trip!!

Get travel insurance - for the cost of it compared to the massive amounts of stuff that aren't covered under your Euro medical card its worth it.

Depending on who your bank account is with, you might have it already (mine's with HSBC and their travel insurance is pretty decent - and might even cover whoever you're travelling with).

I always think it's worth having it - it covers more than just you being damaged - belongings being stolen/permanently redirected by airlines, belongings being damaged, getting you both home if either of you is injured (always a fun conversation with airlines) that sort of thing. It also covers any healthcare you might need (which admittedly might not be an issue if you're in the EU) or if you need private healthcare. It will be more for two of you than one (normally) but surely you'd be splitting the cost between you?
