Technology and me

Today I have been most upset by the news that Game might be going into administration if they don't come up with cash by March 25th. As owners of GameStation this means that they too will disappear. Life priorities clearly shown here by Karo ( Read more... )

I think for some people it is definitely an obsession gone too far, but for most people it's just another form of entertainment. One I don't partake in, but I ticked almost all the boxes for other gadgets, so I can't talk really. I do think we're too dependent on them, but I'm enjoying them too much to give them up...

I agree with the above comment; I think some people can get too dependent on whatever, but this isn't the case for everyone.

We have each flavour of Playstation, a Wii, my brother has an XBox 360, and I have a Nintendo DS. I've got a laptop, smartphone (a Blackberry) and a digital camera. I hope to buy an iPad when I've had a full month's wages, and am going to upgrade to an iPhone when my contract is up for renewal in July /fascinating tale, chap.

You just reminded me how much I utterly miss my Xbox360 T_T

I also agree with medusa_nw, it becomes an obsession for some, but there will always be an obssession with some people.

I am on the verge of getting a smartphone(for the first time!) and I am so excited. I love my pull-out keyboard, but I want to move on and join the real-world.

I think sometimes people are too dependent on technology for communication. It's one thing to love it (even obsess over it) for entertainment. But I've got coworkers who, though I can look out my office door and make eye contact with them, will IM me or send an email as often as they will actually talk to me. I've been guilty of the same thing...as though speaking were just too much trouble! More bizarre, I've seen my boyfriend's daughter's friends sit next to each other (outside of school, mind you) and text rather than talking. That just seems weird to me.

I was about to go on a rant about how I like technology but don't use many fancy gadgets...and then I realised I had ticked nearly every box under the 'gadgets' option. :P Er, hypocrisy much?

I do think though that some people rely solely on it for communication and/or entertainment when they don't necessarily have to. For example, since I'm disabled and can't really use a normal phone, a smartphone is excellent for me since I can text and email people instead. Same with a laptop, since I'm pretty much housebound these days. But when you go out and you see people texting like mad and not even talking to each other whilst at a concert, at the cinema, etc., it's baffling!
