Right now, it appears the website owner is starting off with the basics of networking. Like Facebook, everyone gets his own wall where he "blogs" and you generate your own friends list from people you discover either through a general search that yields results by name, location or keyword matches or by people you find either on your friends' lists or on the 'online now' list. He's definitely open to suggestions and has a feedback form people can submit. I think discussion communities and forums are an excellent idea and, if you join, you should definitely suggest that idea to him.

It's much, much simpler and more navigable than Facebook. Speaking of which, I posted this same discussion on my Facebook wall and the owner of Bearbook wrote a very comprehensive reply to the various comments made. Perhaps you'd care to raise your suggestion for the addition of user interest communities there?

At the risk of being unpopular: I got over identifying myself by animals a while ago, or not so much got over it as never got that into it. I don't believe I've ever called myself a bear, cub, wolf, otter whatever. ;)

I joined as a beta tester a long time ago and started in during the closed testing period. It had the cool, pioneering feel that the earliest communities on the net had at that time. Now that it's open, it's more like an everyday chat thing but with the ability to post raunchy pix. Problem is, too many people take advantage of the latter just because they can. There's nothing special about intarweb peen and yawning chasms of hairy buttcrack anymore. The site has a lot of potential, and the owners are putting forth a lot of effort to make it as such, but I see it wasted among all the dudes using it to post their money shots. There are a few gems to be found though. I check it at best once a day now, some guys use the service to post some really cool stuff. Otherwise, I've lost quite a bit of enthusiasm I originally had for it.

I guess you just gotta sift through all the waste and find what's useful to you. You've just described human ursine nature, I'm afraid.

And, on the occasion you DO want it, you too can has p33n.

Did you delete your account altogether, or it's just sitting there collecting virtual dust?

For the sake of consistency, I looked you up anyway. You must not have added a userpic or location because I couldn't identify anyone that would be you and the only two named "Phil" have neither. I'm finding the site kinda fun.
