Ok, im at the gym on day 8 of my workout/diet schedule. and im working hard as normal, when i notice this REALLY cute girl (tall, short black hair, tan, flawless smile, athletic build) is stealing glances at me (and yes, it had to be me unless she was stealing glances at the section of wall behind me). probably cause i was wearing a red sox shirt ( Read more... )

First of all- don't give up!

Second- going from 252 to 230 in 3 weeks is completely unrealistic, not to mention unhealthy. The most you should be losing per week is 2 lbs. Any more than that and it is unhealthy and you are likely to gain it right back.

Third- give yourself some time. You probably have sluggish metabolism and it will take a while to see results. Are you doing CARDIO along with strength training? The only way to burn fat quickly is through a combination of cardio, strength training and eating well (*small* healthy meals everty 4 hours). If one of these 3 aspects is missing it will be A LOT harder for you.

Well back when i was doing this for the first time ever. i got down to 200 fairly easily. best part was i was doing it at roughly 5 lbs a week.

I figured it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to double my workout routine and do it every day instead of what i used to do (four days a week). and lose 7lbs a week. given that i started this 8 days ago on the idea that i had 3 weeks til the date i set up for myself i thought it achievable.

and back then i did it all on a diet of diet soda and buffalo tenders (not kidding). now i cut out the buffalo tenders and im only drinking half the diet soda i used to. i figured it was an improvement in all areas.

i didn't do cardio then either. i guess my problem is that i don't know what it is that im doing different now than what i did then.

You gained the weight back, which means that losing 5 lbs. per week was not sustainable for you. Anyone can lose that much per week if they want to. It doesn't mean they SHOULD. That's the difference.

Also, if you want to KEEP it off you can't just "go on a diet" and then go off of it. It has to be a permanent change, otherwise as soon as you go back to the old habits the weight will come back.

Drinking only 1/2 the diet soda you used to is a good improvement! That's awesome!

The problem is that you're trying to do it the right way now.. so the weight loss will be slower, but hopefully more long-lasting.

Also, you may have had more to lose the first time. It comes off easier the more you have to lose.

If you had really unhealthy habits the first time around, and then went to really healthy overnight the weight would fall off because of the big difference in habit. I'm guessing that there isn't such a big difference in your habits from 9+ days ago and what you are doing now.

I hate saying this :-P

But, listen to QueenofPink.

The reason it isn't going down now as easy as it did then is that you're older. Our individual biochemistry is constantly changing as we age so the way your body processed and stored food five years ago is a heck of a lot different than the way it does now. It's possible in another five years your body will react differently to the stuff you put in it on a daily basis, but you have to train it to do so. It'll take more than a few weeks of cardio - It's a complete change of lifestyle and a commitment to healthy living.

Also make sure you are drinking LOTS of water, and NOT soda... or other calorie-filled drinks.

Your other lady friend is right on all counts! A) Be less hard on yourself B) Don't compare Last Time You Tried This with This Time. Body mechanisms slow down. And if you're just looking to lose weight, skip the muscle-building and do lots of cardio. But if you're doing rock-climbing classes, the muscle-building is probably even more important than the weight ( ... )

I respectfully disagree on the above post about skipping muscle building.

Weight training is an important part of the 3 steps process (cardio, weights, diet) for several reasons:

Weight training boosts your metabolism, not only while you are doing it, but for hours afterward.

Weight training also assures you are burning fat, not muscle, from your diet and cardio work.

First of all, the second level of hell is not for you, unless you were doing more than just thinking about talking to the girl. YOu probably want the third (gluttons) or fifth (slothful), where I usually hang out. Though I am amused that clicking the location link brings up a map to somewhere in Philadelphia ( ... )
