Oh my God, anon. I knew the prompt was hard, and it would be a commitment, but I honestly wasn't expecting something so long and so involved. You didn't just write what I specified, but told the whole story in an emotionally complex and sensitive manner, painting this relationship so as to encapsulate just how messed up it is, yet also make it believable and even understandable. Misa's need is so tangible, and it's heartbreaking of itself but made even worse thanks to all the evidence you see of how cruel Light really was to her, and yet how devoted she was - how the only way that she feels better is for someone to treat her badly, how she feels validated by that, and yet how destructive that is in so many ways. God, anon, I'm not even a fan of hers and yet my heart is hurting over her

;_; Thank you so much. This is probably the best comment I've ever received on a fic. I have such a soft spot for misunderstood characters, the ones pushed to the side because they are "annoying" or "just comic relief" because it's so often that there's so much more behind them... so these two are naturally two of my favorite characters in DN.

Matsuda has such a huge case of envy over Light, I thought this was a great way to explore it, even if it made him a little more twisted than I usually envision him. A lot of people take the admiration as a crush on him, which is understandable considering how deep the admiration is, but I personally think that if that were the case, he'd be too swayed by love to shoot him like he did. He has such an enormous inner child, and I think the envy was the "I wanna be him when I grow up" factor, despite how much older than Light he was. He related to him so much, I think, that he felt personally insulted when it turned out Light was cruel, as if it reflected on him too.
