Death Note's fandom

It's true that Death Note is one of my favorite series of all time, but when I think of the others that emotionally impacted me, I've noticed that I'm pretty rarely persuaded to be active in the fandom. In some series, I feel that everything that needed to be said was expressed in the actual canon, so I'm content with my own thoughts/opinions. In ( Read more... )

Death Note is my main fandom and I'm fairly active in it (or at least I'm more active in it than in my other fandoms - I'm supremely introverted, so my standards of activeness are generally rather low ^^;;;) - I write short fanfics, draw fanart and participate in discussions... well, sometimes. So yeah, it's a pretty big part of my life.

My biggest problem with the fandom is that it hates my favorite girl. ;-; Tastes differ and all, I know, but it makes me a sad panda.

Takada? I'm pretty sure I'm one of the few Mello fans that doesn't hate her XD; Some people are bitter when their favorite is killed off; I'm... used to it XD

The only other fandom I've been really involved in is R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt series. That fandom had a few similarities with DN in terns of discussion material and exploration of backstory ( ... )

I agree completely with the sentiment in your last paragraph. In Death Note, most of my first writing consisted of scenes I felt could have been stuck into the canon, focusing on the characters thoughts and characterization. Now I don't mind altering the storyline in a "what if" sense, but always with the intention of staying true to the original tone and characters and never as a "I wish this had happened instead". I want to, as you said, expand and explore on the canon universe, not rewrite it.

I usually never talk about manga with people outside the fandom but I made an exception for Death Note and got some friends and colleagues into it.
I'm not active in the fandom but I appreciate the fics, they are of a much higher quality than most manga/anime fics.

I don't think I could classify Death Note as my main fandom, as I have not done much by way of fan stuff like fics and art and all that, but I do enjoy discussions such as this and I did write about Death Note for an essay in school, so I wouldn't say I'm not active in it. I've just had a buttload of work to do and stuff so I haven't been able to be particularly active... That made no sense. ^^;

I think you make a good point - Death Note is such a mystery that people have to create things about it in their own minds. It also asks some huge, unanswerable questions - the fandom discusses these and unwittingly becomes a massive group of philosophers. I love this aspect of the fandom.

Well, I'm generally not active in fandom outside of reading fic and writing/obsessing by myself XD And I'm pretty new to this fandom still but... the one thing I like that I haven't really seen in the other fandoms I've lurked in lately is the discussion. I love that there's a comm like this that's specifically *for* talking about everything that is Death Note. It's nice to have another way to analyze/express things besides fanfiction or fanart.

I have to admit the idea for a discussion-only community isn't my own, exactly! Years ago when I was in the Gundam Wing fandom, someone thought to make one because that was also a much more intelligent series that had more merit than most of its fangirls gave it credit for. I'd been meaning to start a community like this for awhile for Death Note, but I wasn't sure if there would be enough interest, or it the gen community had enough discussion as it was.

I'm glad you like it, though. Discussion is cool. XP

May I ask where that icon's from? The artwork looks absolutely gorgeous.

:D It's from a doujinshi called Pieta. It's about Light becoming a Shinigami after he dies, but he's kind of "innocent!Light" again. It's long and epic and fully translated in English.. want it?
