Recently, I have witnessed some (former?) Hahn fans trying to find valid arguments why Erica Hahn was doomed to be axed from Grey's AnatomyThe list included

She definitely did work as a character and would still be on the show if she didn't come out. There are plenty of strong female characters on tv, only they are all straight (or haven't come out). It is clear to me that on tv you can be a strong female character and be straight or you can be a young sexy fem who is gay/bisexual. There is no room for a strong lesbian. It's just not accepted.
The thing with those shows is that they were not on the big three/four networks. Those shows are not expected to draw in large numbers and are not fueled by the huge advertising dollars like a show like Grey's. I think that's why it worked for them. Nobody made much of a big deal with Willow on Buffy either (not that Willow was especially strong). I think smaller network shows have more creative freedom.
For the last three seasons, GA has been all about the big moments, the shocking events and the drama. Love was reduced to corny gestures, over the top speeches and bed-hopping. Patients nothing more than metaphors and the multi part episodes done for the ratings

First of all, I want to ask where you have been reading people bad-mouthing the character? I know of one particular post in the erica_callie community (I think) where people were saying that the writers screwed up in never letting us see Hahn's background, and as such the reason why she acted the way she did. And that this may have resulted in people not liking her. Is this the post you are referring to? I commented in there too with the aforementioned opinion. That post in particular wasn't meant to say negative things about the character, it was more about how the writers failed. Anyhow, maybe that wasn't what you were talking about at all and in that case I'm just talking nonsense :p
I do agree with the reasons you give for why Erica Hahn was a great character. I still love her after all this time. And it still makes me sad to think we won't see her again. :(
I think you are spot on with this paragraph: However, it seems that many Grey's fans just don't have a knack for that sort of tension and humor. They prefer their tv world

I've had and read several discussions with some people basically saying the same, trying to convince themselves of certain "truths" (that the character had been badly written, that she was overly abrasive, that the writers had taken it too far, etc.).
So, no, it wasn't just that one post on e_c. ;-)
It's just sad how most people who watch television just want to see the same old storylines again and again, just for mindless entertainment.
Yeah. It's not that GA was an educational show or anything, but it used to challenge people in regard of certain conservative points of view.
And any kind of television, even the merely entertaining one, does have a subconscious influence on its audience.
And she was downright funny in her way of reminding people that they were there to work, not to flirt and the like, and her harsh and unexpected one-liners always rocked every scene.
So true. Erica Hahn was an amazing character. I loved how snarky she was towards others. Hahn's hardcore attitude and her professionalism made her really stand out on Grey's, IMO. It's really ABC's loss for not realizing the potential in a character like Hahn.

I don't live in the States and thus am a poor judge of how U.S. television networks approach crative freedom or how open-minded they are.
But you are probably right.
