Same money, same worries about money, moving & moving expenses, giving up tenure.............let me think about this for a minute.....I wouldn't do it. I believe you're right.
It may not be wise to go to LA for the same salary you currently earn, but there's nothing wrong with telling Fancy U. that you're considering the offer to go work somewhere sunnier and more interesting. When F.U. offers you even more money than they had planned in order to persuade you to stay, you could make yourself a solemn vow to spend the entire raise visiting NYC more often. But you expected me to say that, didn't you.
I'll be thinking of you. I'll be up both early and late working on a project in my home studio. Call anytime.
It can't hurt to ask for more and see what they do with the request. Good luck with this trip... I'll be thinking of you and will try to call. I'm really sorry I missed you over the weekend.
I think you should keep thinking that. To add on commute costs the cost of apts, food, fun... and the reality that there will be probably be NOOOOOOO raises or cost of living or merit increases for a couple years. Sure getting out of small town, living in a place you want to see things but have to pay for it. The ability to travel up here... it's going to cost. So you have to decide... cuz they are not going really, I don't think cough up any more. It's amazing they got the go ahead to offer you the job. We have across the board "freeze" as in no way no how can't do it. The word NO is suddenly in vogue again around here.
I wish this wasn't happening now. The timing sucks big time.
of COURSE you are interested in a counter offer, no matter what your thinking is at the moment! Get more money from current place! Get big fellowship! Make more money, go to NYC more, and apply for other jobs next year in places you want to live.....
Enough with the excessive punctuation. Just send your chair a quick note saying you are interested in a counter offer, and then deal with your family and Florida.
