The Coward's Best Friend.

Mar 30, 2005 00:00

First off, let me start this post by saying I hate guns. I think they're niggardly, cowardly, yellow, weakling's tools. I think that Americans are in love with the things, because the bulk of Americans are cowards who look for quick flashy answers to their problems ( Read more... )

I've heard it said that a majority of home-invasion crooks tend to be more intimidated by finding a resident armed with a sword as opposed to a handgun. Barring that, hearing the unmistakeable sound of a shotgun is usually enough to make people defecate themselves.

But for me, I prefer to wield a giant piece of sharp steel at home. Traveling around, I rely on martial arts & hand-to-hand skills for self protection.
My $.02

All the kung-fu in the world won't stop a bullet, I'm afraid. I'm thinking of takin a few self-defense classes just forthe training, but I'm still going to pick up an equalizer.

... you could get a bear. or a musk ox.. or some other huge out of place creature.

NOTHING messes with you if you have a bear.

For home defense, consider a pump action shotgun rather than a handgun. The *sound* of the pump being run will scare away the vast majority of potential burglers. And any drugged up enough to continue, you'll want the stopping power of a shotgun. Also, check your local laws regarding whether you have the right to defend your property and in what circumstances. Best option is to take a local firearms course that covers legal issues, so you're prepared and well-armed (heh) with knowledge.

I realize this is a tough decision for you. Take your time with it. Feel comfortable with whatever you choose.

If it comes to someone breaking into my house (which is a legitimate fear in my neighborhood...), I have to be honest. I don't want to scare them away. I want to kill them, quickly and efficiently. For that purpose, I would pick up a shot-gun simply because it's got the most guarantee of a quick kill at short range with a minimum of aiming.

I'd like to think that just whipping out an axe and chop-chop-chopping would be good enough, but these days...who knows.

An inportant question here. Are you thinking you might kill someone with the weapon of choise?

If you are moral ok with that as an outcome I would go with the shotgun, for home defence.

But then I am crazy. I would go with a large free range snake. and maybe a pet croc. And a few extra animal noises, sacares the shit out of most people.

Well, I ain't gonna point a gun at somebody with the intent to make them giggle. All of my crazy Georgia and Mormon cousins agree that if you pull a gun out, you better use it with intent to kill, or don't pull it out at all.

Heh.. you said niggardly. Yet another reason I love you.

I said that once, in public, to my boyfriend.. almost got us kicked out of Denny's because no one uses that word anymore and the staff thought I was being a racist.

I'm really depressed by the dumbing down of our already dumb language.
