Judge Dread

Sooo....i've been thinking for a while now (well a few years actually!) of getting real dreads put in, and recently i've found someone v.trustworthy in Notts who can do them. It's a bit nail biting as they are kinda permanent, but it would really make sense as most of the time i wear fake dreads to go out - actually feel quite naked without them! ( Read more... )

thanks for the advice - the green water in the bath sounds pretty horrific!

Hmmm... I would never interfere with a woman's decision to change her hair, but I will say that dreads really don't come across as professional or attractive.

*ducks amazingly large number of scenesters who will now start flinging criticism*

As a director I used to work for once said, "I like the guy and he's got good skills, but do you know any other executives or directors who have a full beard and long hair in this company."

Of course dreads aren't as forever as facial tattoos, but it's never good in the early years of your career to cut opportunities short.

That's a very good point - having real-dreads where i currently work wouldnt be a problem but i dont intend to stay there forever. Generally, the Creative Industries are possibly one of the best industries to work in when you look different - but it really comes down to the company and peoples attitudes. Maybe i should wait a few years until (hopefully!) i'm already in a management position and then get them done:)

I second the knotty boy website. I got my dread kit from there (I wussed out from having dreads - after a week of not washing my hair, I caved and very carefully removed all the wax and added half a bottle of conditioner onto it)... but I did use my kit to do a lad's hair from Leicester. His dreads have taken nicely.

The only thing is that once you enter into it, you have to really want it.

if you're worried about your job (which was my main worry about having them done), go for small dreads. These are better anyway as they plump up.

DEFINITELY have someone else do it for you. And be prepared for your scalp to be a bit ouchie.

Knotty boy has LOADS of advice, along with a list of Knotty Boy vendors in the UK... although I recommend just doing a "knotty boy" search on ebay for the goods at the same prices.

Good luck with it! i'm still thinking about it!

I had real dreads, of a sort, when I was 21 and a student. Did the whole not washing with shampoo and stuff for over a year, but there was so little info about back then (it was pre-internet!) I ended up with really wiry spidery ones and lots of frizziness too. But I was a bit new-agery then and had copper wire and stuff in amongst them too, so it kinda looked okay-ish.

If I didn't have the job I had now, I'd probably have dreads, albeit the synthetic ones - I'd be changing my mind about colour combos and length and chunkiness, etc. all the time for me to have real ones again.

Yep. I have my ticket and room all booked for Infest. Will see you there! :D I am considering white and black dreads for this year.... I have black and red ones already made up, but I had a change of heart and now can't decide which to go for. Boo!

I ought to head over to Notts sometime soon too - I keep telling that Mr. Ashe that I'll come over, but summit's forever cropping up :P Pfeh.
