Judge Dread

Sooo....i've been thinking for a while now (well a few years actually!) of getting real dreads put in, and recently i've found someone v.trustworthy in Notts who can do them. It's a bit nail biting as they are kinda permanent, but it would really make sense as most of the time i wear fake dreads to go out - actually feel quite naked without them! ( Read more... )

Hrm. You might be able to guess this, but I can possibly give reasonably good advice here! (and my god, that's a first for me.)

As far as it goes, they're a *real* pain to keep in good condition for the first six months or so, and you have to be damn careful if you go swimming/wet your hair for a good few weeks until they start to properly knot.

I've had mine for probably about 18 months now, though, and they're not a huge amount of effort any more -- 15 minutes or so every day to palmroll and re-wax any fluffy ones. Much easier than getting regulation straight black goth hair.. though they are still a nightmare to wash! Also, don't expect them to stay perfect -- a few of mine have ended up much thicker than the surrounding dreads 'cause two or three knotted together at the roots, which is just impossible to undo.

Though I'm not trying to put you off here -- I've never regretted getting mine put in!

Thank you for the good advice - and genuinely, its really good to hear advice from friends that have dreads or have had personal experiences of them. You've not put me off - keeping them in good condition for the first 6 months doesn't sound too bad - my real hair already takes quite a bit of effort - washing, straightening, styling etc. Future career plans actually put me off more:( i'll have to think about it some more.

You infesting btw?

Yeah, the fact it'd be less effort than my hair was previously was why I put the dreads in in the first place. T'was a choice of that, an undercut, or a mohawk, and dreads just seemed at the time like the most low-maintenance option...

I was probably *wrong* there, but I never regretted it. ;)

And yep, I'll be at Infest. I'm being lazy and decadent and staying at Arkwright, so I don't have to do any walking out in the -shudder- sun!

I just wanted to say I think you'd look really beautiful with them (as always!) and I'd be super jealous!

Urk, I dunno hon! You'd look great with them for sure... but I've heard too many bad stories from friends and friends of friends of horrible stinky unmanagable dreads that in the end have to be shaved off... cant imagine you with a skin head!

Sorry I offend any 'dreadys' here! Just speaking from experience..

Personally Id be happy with the best of both worlds...and the ability to wear different types of dreads/extensions whenever I want..

good luck!

Might be worth having a word with Jill (as in Pimp clothing Jill, DeathMetalBen's ex-gf Jill) about dreads, cos she's got very well maintained ones.

If you had to shave your head, it'd be a perfect excuse to play with wigs for a while while it grew back...

I wouldn't do it, I'd be too worried about keeping them clean. It is of course totally up to you, but I wouldn't like the idea of not being able to have shiny smooth hair if I wanted it for an evening.

You'll look ace with them I'm sure, but you look just as ace as you are!
