Serves me right for avoiding the dentist for the last 15 years. For the last couple of months, I'd been having a throbbing pain in my left jaw coupled with inability to tolerate cold products. It came to a head the week before my exam and so I made an appt with a dentist to see what the heck was going on

I've had more than my share of root canals over the years - five, if I am remembering correctly. But I apparently have a high pain threshold in my teeth, as they didn't bother me all that much. I've known other people who had a harder time with it. Be prepared to use ibuprofen and eat soft foods afterwards.
The biggest piece of advice I can give you is this: make sure they give you a jaw block (aka: triangle-ish piece of semi-hard rubber to put between your teeth on the opposite side from where they will be working). The first root canal I had they didn't give me one of those and I had to *hold* my mouth open the whole time... ugh! That was painful. With the jaw block in place, you're just resting your teeth on the rubber, and it keeps your mouth open.

If you have trouble with headaches (predominantly on the side you will be getting the root canal done on) - it might get better after the root canal! I used to get migraines about once a month before I got all my dental work done. Now, I rarely have migraines! I used to be able to trace a straight line up from my affected tooth, across the cheekbone and to a point in my eyebrow - exactly where I used to feel the migraine pain.
Now I just get headaches due to TMJ! whee!

If you're drunk enough you'll forget you were in pain - heck you might even forget you had a root canal! Just don't forget to pick Chaotic and I up at the airport (so you have a sober up for a few hours... sorry) :P
