In my opinion, it's perfectly satisfactory to point to where a total is.

Is it not obvious if rather than using words that I use my hands to communicate that maybe, just perhaps, I can't talk?

I understand it's not a common setback, but it's not exactly like I give off the impression I'm going to stab someone in the face with one of the hotdog sticks.
