My personal canon finds sixteen-year-old Winifred accidentally overhearing some of Helen's friends talking about Lady Mary's scandalous past. Winifred is thoroughly intrigued by this and ends up thinking her (previously slightly dull) Aunt Mary a positively heroic and exciting figure, much to Harriet's amusement.
