As far as cool places to go in other cities, I'm not that clued up on anywhere other than tokyo, as I stayed near tokyo for most of my time in Japan. If you are in Osaka though, you will definitely enjoy Ameri-Mura. It's a little district in inner city Osaka with lots of subcultural goings-on.
