A reflection for all those who think being the youth dude is easy...

So.... I have been reading a lot of youth groupies entries lately, and have been hearing so much though the grapevine. It hurts me to know that any of my kids are hurting. I have a lot to say, 'specially about the youth leader/JLR topic ( Read more... )

Joe, I think you made great decisions through this whole process. I saw all of the people that applied, and i do know a majority of them to a certain extent. All of the people that applied to BE a youth leader all had excellent applications because they are youth groupies. They have been shown right from wrong and kindness from hatred by you, Jean, Jeanne, Robyn, and DB. You guys shaped us as youth groupies. You made us kinder, and made us appreciate everything. If people decide that they don't want to come back to youth group because they weren't chosen, they are absolutely crazy. I was one of the kids not chosen, and instead of becoming crushed, I stayed optimistic. We always have next year, or the year after that. If we give up, then we aren't true youth groupies.

I honestly think that you guys did an amazing job of picking youth leaders. I mean like you said, people in that room where you announced youth leaders have been in youth group for a couple of weeks and some for years and making an effort to get to know all of us and hear us out about what we think seriously takes heart and a lot of effort. I would have done what you did...not pick out of a hat because that would be unfair but somehow work together with Jean,Jeanne, and Robyn like you did and hope that others wouldn't get too upset because after all you do show us how much you love us each week. I just hope that others that didn't make it (like me) had comfort from the ones that did and you had your reasons so I think that, those that want to leave youth group didn't really understand the letter and the goodnights each week.

very hard question.
I probably would've had the kids of youth group nominate and pick the 8 youth leaders. Who better to choose the leaders of youth group than the youth group itself?
just another idea. You'd most likely end up with pretty much the same people anyways.

Anyways, didn't matter who you picked, you couldn't have made a 'wrong' choice; we are quite an amazing bunch :-P ..So don't feel bad about it... everyone understands it was a very hard job and that some people were going to be let down no matter what.. just remember your youth group still loves you.. even the kids that felt hurt because they weren't picked.. take it from me :-)
