Har! So I took my paycheck from Tiernan's over to B of A (those would be the people couldn't get my address right for two years) and attempted to cash it. (these would be the people who were too drunk to train me, subsequently firing me). You guessed it: insufficient funds. So I'll have to go back tomorrow and try again. Why is it when the ( Read more... )

I know what you mean - San Jose seems particularly good for this phenomenon too. Maybe it is becaus eit is so big and sprawling, but I always felt like I was on some kind of treasure hunt when I'd drive around there. Like there was always some archaric strip mall to be dicsovered, just around the corner.

That's actually a really good description of San Jose. I think also it feels likea treasure hunt 'cause San Jose's basically what you make of it, which most people don't get.

Well, I'm kind of glad most people don't get it. That misunderstood quality os part of what makes it so cool.

I used to work at Century 23, around 20 years ago. That was the one right next to the Winchester house. I went down to see the old Century Theater on Blossom Hill Rd where I saw "Murder By Death" (it was pouring down raining that day, for some reason I remember it very clearly) but alas, it's been turned into some kind of church or "house of worship". Blasphamy! It already WAS a house of worship! I used to trap mice under my coke cups there.. watchin' "Gumball Rally" and "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" with the other pea-brained runts!

Okay, so Angelos was/is a place i must've missed???? and my ex worked at Century 22 or 23 twenty years ago - which one burned down in the early 1980's? We were able to see alot of movies for free that we would have NEVER paid for because he worked there. It's strange that even Century 25 (on Saratoga/Prospect) is STILL there. San Jose has a strange way of keeping some of it's past intact, and yet alot of it's bull-dozed over in so many places. Americans have no sense of history on the whole. Sad.

You have a way with words describing south san jose that somehow eluded me when we were out there last weekend. I recognized the door at Angelo's but I didn't think to call it a 10-ton block. As I thought all the stupid up-to-date modifications to the 70's shopping strip malls looked like new Gap clothes slapped on an aging retiree, but couldn't grope with the words when I was out there, as the memories were just too strong. All the same, I'm very glad you were able to make it out there....it wouldn't have been the same going alone.
