As I was getting on the bus this morning, fumbling to get my stuff and myself to a seat while the bus was turning, I was thinking about how odd it was in Bermuda that the bus driver would wait until everyone was situated/seated before driving away from a stop. I think that living in a well-to-do island paradise must make people much more relaxed ( Read more... )

FWIW, when I was a bus driver on the UConn campus and in the city of Willimantic, I would wait until folks were seated until pulling away. I would also -pull over-, for that matter, and not block the road. There's also that whole issue of signaling, as well as smoothly braking and accelerating. I would also train my drivers to do all of these things.

There are probably two main reasons you probably don't see most of these things in many places. One is the timetables. They probably aren't scheduled with enough room in them between stops, so the driver is pressured to keep up. The other is that these things probably haven't been identified to the drivers as a priority, and there's no one evaluating them on those critera.. not regularly anyway.

oh yeah, I'm not really complaining about PAT (this time), I'm sure I would be irritated if they took the time on my commute to wait for people to sit down. I am just as hurried and stressed out as everyone else who doesn't live on an island paradise.

As a daily bus rider on O'ahu, I can confirm that the bus does not wait for you to sit before driving away. The one nice thing though, you don't need a schedule to ride the bus here. You never wait more than 10 minutes for the bus you need :-)
