If we got a moment like this in canon--Dean and Cas just sitting together being friends and offering comfort without either of them actually even doing anything, I would probably be a sobbing mess.

I liked the idea that Dean would cut Sam's hair at this point, first, it seems like that might be necessary, but Dean offering care in a way that's concrete and simple. He can't fix everything but he can cut Sam's hair, maybe as a way also of putting Sam's scary breakdown behind them as well, symbolically.
