over lunch the other day, warren and i ended up talking about comfort foods. i guess there was a poll done in the UK not long ago and chocolate topped it and a cup of tea with a biscuit followed closely in second place. this has gotten me thinking of comfort foods and how they would differ from person to person, depending on their families, their ( Read more... )

it's comfort for me cuz i eat it when sick too.
have you tried taking them to one a congee restaurant? there are some really good ones in scarborough that make it really good and creamy. my dad used to bring it home for us. i liked the seafood one best. now that i'm veg, it's hard to get good congee!

i've usually had just the very plain congee (the fanciest is with a little bit of chicken in it). i love the taste of it with a bit salt and pepper with some green onions floating around. so pure!

i didn't know they have congee restaurants. that's pretty neat. when shiu was back in town in the summer, we went for dim sum somewhere up there (wasn't sure if was scarborough or markham). it was good. dim sum is really different these days. i thought they still delivered the food via those carts.

i've never understood the whole comfort food thing, actually. what exactly is a comfort food, you know? i have lots of things that i like to eat, lots of habitual foods, and foods that make me go "mmmm this is so good" i.e. bordering on orgasmic. :D i always associate comfort foods with cheesy fashion mags and slim white women lounging around in their yoga-type clothes sipping tea. and having their damn chocolate. :D

someday i will write that "foods" entry that i've been meaning to write for about the last two months and you shall know all... :)

i think comfort foods are ones that have nostalgic currency for a person - something that makes them remember a better time, every time they have it or something that always is calming, soothing and warmth-giving.

i don't associate comfort foods with priviledged women doing yoga - i think it's more of a grandma/mother thing.

i think of comfort foods as soothing - like something you might want when you're sick or missing home or whatever.

congee is very popular! i'm surprised.

i think french toast is a great idea but i hate eating it.

i felt the same way about rice pudding until recently.

yummmm, steak, medium rare. warren took a food safety class yesterday for work and people were bitching about sushi, steak tartare and cooking steak medium rare. i couldn't believe it.

i don't know why anyone would cook steak well done!!!

i'm glad pho has made the cut. it reminds me of a lot of nice things like going out with my friends. warren says it reminds him of me. we should go to this vietnamese restaurant by huron and highbury (next to the new mekong grocery store) for pho. warren and i went the other night and it was fucking fantastic!

i almost went there with tim once, becuase he had gone there before and said it was good, but then we decided to go somewhere to get non-asian food because he was going to asia within a week.

anyway, i'd love to go next time i'm in town, which will be december 17th.
