A sticky soy sauce jar and two boxes of Aunt Jemima pancake mix. Bricks of ramen noodles and cubes of bouillon. The wood of our cabinets was caked with a thin layer of dust, which combined with the liquids of old foods, making a sticky film. It clung to the old food, fighting my efforts to pick it up, almost as if it was resisting its own demise
