And also I realize that one could argue that Jesus started a religion that has saved countless humans, but I think the millions killed in the name of that religion (not J.C.'s fault but still) offsets any benefit it may have provided by keeping people in line.

jesus was ok by me. he wasn't just a guy who started a new religion- he was a political and religious radical who challenged people to look beyond the comfort of living out the bare minimum of jewish law. he turned 'help the poor' into 'give up everything you have to help the poor'. he wasn't out to start a religion, he inspired so many people to become so passionate about what he said to start a new religion and a new way of life. Furthermore, he gave us the sermon on the mount, which according to kurt vonnegut is the most important social code-- and he says is the foundation for socialism ( ... )

Yeah I'm fairly familiar with that from my glorious catholic upbringing. The only part I really like of the SOTM is the last part, listed there as the warnings (golden rule et al). The rest are very nice thoughts, but like the beatitudes you listed, they all seem to encourage you to act a certian way because of what is coming in the next life NOT this one. If every one of those lines had "for they will make the world a better place" after the comma, I would respect it more. And that was where this "church" was blurring the lines- saving your soul vs. saving the humans on earth.

Jesus was ok by me too, and I respect Vonnegut, but I still find Jesus fairly uninspiring and unoriginal (golden rule concept predated him) compared to many other writers, philosophers, activists, and even other religious figures. But that's just me.

Thanks for that though Norelle, it's been awhile since I looked at that.
