River had been lurking nearby, waiting for the moment to come. It wasn't nice, not telling, but it was more fun that way. Strawberry wants to come out and play, River wants to see her already. Wasn't the same, talking to a tummy.
So she opens the door with a big smile and a receiving blanket draped over one arm. "Table for Two?"
"Two?" states the Captain as he follows River inside, still buttoning his shirt. "Don't tell me she's havin' two of 'em?" Which is when he looks up and sees the scene. Slight cough. Ok, he wanted to be here. He had to remember that. He wanted to be here.
Simon moves to cover Kaylee's ears playfully as Mal makes his comment. His poor wife is already border-line miffed. He grins at the newcomers and chuckles.
"Nope, just one. Although it'll be a table for five by the time this is all over," he says softly.
Mildly annoyed she moves her head so Simon would release her. "Don't touch me." she bites out as her eyes are shut tight and she continues her breathing.
A moment and her eyes open and she gives a quick wave and a "hello!" to Mal and River before the eyes are shut again and the breathing continues in steady pants.
Mal chuckles. "Sure, Doc. I'll do my best." he states patting Simon on the shoulder before moving over to Kaylee and River. He kisses the top of Kay's head. "Hey, mei-mei. How ya doin'?"
Simon has to remind himself that it's only Kaylee's hormones and that she doesn't really hate him...so he slips into doctor mode. Serious Doctor Mode.
He takes his time washing up and pulling on a pair of surgical gloves, finding comfort in the activities. Mal and River can keep Kaylee occupied while he sets everything up.
She turns her head to Mal and gives him a look. "How ya THINK I'm doin'!?" she bites out before another contraction hits and her hand squeezes River's as her eyes shut tight.
Another moan and whimper of pain before she is reaching out for Simon. "Simon..." she pleads. She needed him close at the moment.
The contraction was over and she lets out a breath and moves into Simon. Her eyes are closed and her breathing is heavy, but steady against his shoulder. "Breathe." she whispers. "Just breathe."
She felt safe in his arms. It felt less scary somehow. Warmer.
River smiles and watches, then looks to the Captain.
"Here." she moves down beside him, showing him where to stand. "It should be easy, you'll start to see the baby as she comes out... head first, shoulders... I'll help."
Something about that giggle may indicate she's up to something, but we know River won't do anything to endanger Kaylee so it can't be anything too bad.
Mal swallows. "Right...think of th'babe..think of th'babe."
Deep breath and he sticks his head under the blanket to check to see how far Kaylee is along and immediately sticks his head out again with a blink and a breath.
"Doc? I really think you should be th'one doin' this..." he bites out.
Reassuringly, "You said it yourself, Mal. All you have to do is catch. Once Kay's fully dilated, it'll happen by itself. All Miri needs is someone to support her head and neck."
Kaylee squeezes Simon's hand as the pain seems to get a bit worse. Her head falls back against Simon's shoulder and her eyes close as she breathes. Steady pants of air. She focused on Miranda because if she was listening to Mal and Simon right now, the mun believes Kaylee would have a few choice words for her Captain.
"Breathe." River whispers, wincing as an echo of Kaylee's pain hits her. "Randa Miranda Strawberry, pudding and mudpies..." her hand stroking the belly.
"Time to come out and play, time to play now... Baby's gotten into the batter with the red dye, can't happen until you come out to meet us... Mommy and Daddy are waiting and Uncle Mal's ready to have you in his arms... The whole world of Serenity is stopped and waiting for our girl to come see us..."
it comes out in a bit of a mumble, River's eyes are distant and unfocused "Had a bad dream once, that you didn't want to come but I know you do... can feel you wanting to come... Simon I think she's almost ready to start pushing."

"If you'd rather River did it..."
Which leaves River open to give her excuses on why she can't.
