The idea is actually to save all of them at least long enough to make sure they are on my own card list for the following year (which ought to take mere moments, but usually ends up being until the following year) and then keep only those which are especially memorable for some reason. The reality is they all get kept, indefinitely.
I display them until Twelfth Night, then cut apart the ones I like in order to use them on the tree next year, but this past year I saved a card which read, "May Krampus overlook your naughtiness this year" because it was made of win and awesome.
