AKA - BIG Ass Winter StormMost of Georgia (and the SE for that matter) is under a massive "snow blitz" - snow, sleet and freezing rain of near epic proportions. In the Atlanta Metro Area, we have an average of 5 to 7" of snow (closer to a 1' in the mountains) so far - now being compounded by the onslaught of an ice storm ( Read more... )

we are not "so fucked". you do realize that i learned to drive on far worse snow and ice than this? :P and the town i lived in did not shut down! imagine that! we're only "so fucked" because our governor and news media create a damn panic over it all. it makes me laugh. :)

Well, I'm from the snowbelt area of Upstate NY where we got 100-inches a year. Hell, it could snow 2' or more and nothing would close. But that's because we had the monster plows, chains on tires - etc. However, down in the south with little or no REAL snow removal equipment and this crap already becoming a frozen, icy mass - its a different story. We are fucked for at least several days - as this crap won't easily melt and will re-freeze each night.

Drive on this icy crap if you wish, but I prefer saving my relatively new car from fender benders.

I'm from the snowbelt area of New York state near Penssylvania and I agree.

As an Alaskan I have to chuckle a bit how folks get all panicky when a bit of snow hits. As your online friend I hope you have everything you need to wait it out. Sometimes, even up here, no matter how good you are, you're sometimes just at the mercy of the other yahoos on the road.

Its gone to ICE now. Just went out and walked the yard - its a hard, icy mass and will freeze rock hard tonight. Snow isn't hard to drive on if you have the right tires and skill set (I'm from BIG snow country) - but ice is a different story.

Ice isn't bad either. The big problem is when it is freezing rain with high winds. Then you get the polished ice, which is nasty. We had a couple days before Thanksgiving which were pretty bad, but even still...good tires and good driving skill set will mitigate most of your problems.

that's called time to stay in and work on projects; no point in trying to be stupid and go anywhere

Exactly. I have some things I've been putting off to do - like cataloging my meteorite collection. A good day to hang out in the man-cave and cook yummy stuff in the kitchen.

HA!

and the person that got all holier than though snotty about it all, obviously has NO clue what WET snow on top of wet ICE (freeze, thaw, repeat) is like to drive on.

I didn't either until I moved here.

I had the same pompous attitude having lived in Wyoming, Colorado and Utah.

until I tried to drive on it.

add that, to your area not having the equipment and expertise to deal with it and it's best to just stay home.

cold as as a witch's tit

For the record, most witches I know are pretty warm-hearted!

Hope you and the kitties have plenty of beer and skittles and heat...
